A New Initiative Marks the International Volunteer Year 2026 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria
On 18 July 2026, the first meeting of the project "Youth Voices for Volunteering – International Volunteer Year 2026 (IVY 2026)" brought together young people from Plovdiv and the surrounding region to begin a journey of learning, collaboration and community engagement.
Implemented by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bulgaria Association, the initiative is dedicated to celebrating the International Volunteer Year 2026 by empowering young people to become active volunteers and ambassadors for volunteering in their local communities.
Over the coming months, nearly 20 participants will build a strong volunteer network, explore the values and goals of the International Volunteer Year 2026, and design their own community-based micro-campaigns. Through these initiatives, they will address local needs, encourage civic participation and inspire more people to get involved in volunteering.
The first meeting introduced participants to the organisation's work, the objectives of the International Volunteer Year 2026, and the broader European volunteering landscape. It also provided an opportunity for the group to reflect on their personal motivations, define common goals and begin shaping their ideas for future activities.
Before launching their campaigns, the participants will take part in two additional workshops focused on team building, project planning and campaign development. These sessions will equip them with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to turn their ideas into meaningful local action.
The project will culminate on 5 December – International Volunteer Day. To celebrate the participants' achievements and promote the value of volunteering, the initiative will conclude with a public photo exhibition showcasing their activities, followed by a community discussion on the role of volunteering in strengthening local communities and fostering active citizenship.
