Beyond Helping: Community Volunteering for Blind Children’s Independence

Supporting blind children’s independence requires accessible learning environments, greater participation in society and shared responsibility among those around them. Volunteering plays an important role in developing community-based approaches that help children make their own decisions and navigate daily life more independently.

Yusuf Kaya, Resource Development Manager at Parıltı Görmeyen Çocuklara Destek Derneği, will draw on the association’s experience to explore the difference between helping and empowering, and the impact of volunteering on accessibility. Through Parıltı’s approach to volunteering, the webinar will examine how volunteers’ work with children, families and their wider communities supports independent living skills and participation in society.

Through practical examples, the webinar will explore the role of the social environment in blind children’s independence, accessibility as a shared responsibility and volunteers’ involvement in support activities. It will also discuss how volunteers move from providing individual assistance to becoming active contributors to social change, the lasting impact of community volunteering and ways to sustain structures that support children’s independence after volunteers’ involvement ends.

We invite everyone interested in supporting blind children’s independent living, exploring volunteering models that improve accessibility and creating lasting social impact through community solidarity to join this webinar.

The event will take place online as part of the World Volunteer Day 2026.
It is open to everyone and completely free of charge, including a certificate of participation.
