Drawing as a Path to Thinking and Creativity in Early Childhood

Drawing and engaging with works of art offer rich opportunities to develop children’s attention, imagination, associative thinking and cognitive flexibility. Combining visual impressions, movement, sensory experiences and experimentation with art materials helps preschool children explore the world around them, form new connections and express themselves creatively.

Liudmyla Shulha, Associate Professor at Zaporizhzhia National University, will present neuropedagogical approaches to engaging with art and using drawing to support children’s cognitive development. Particular attention will be given to practical methods that combine artistic creativity with multisensory exploration, movement and associative thinking.

During the webinar, participants will explore the “Stepping into a Painting” method, which encourages children to imagine the sounds, smells and sensations of temperature within a depicted scene, alongside the movement-based spatial practice “Drawing in Space”. The webinar will also examine games with colour and shape, experiments with unconventional art materials and examples of “phygital” creativity, combining traditional drawing with digital art tools to develop children’s cognitive flexibility, resourcefulness and emotional engagement.

We invite early childhood educators, teachers, curriculum specialists, psychologists, students in education programmes and everyone interested in using creative art practices to develop preschool children’s thinking, imagination and active engagement in learning to join the webinar.

The webinar is being organised within the scope of the International Volunteer Year (IVY). It is free of charge, and participants will receive certificates upon completion.
