New York, 5 December – The International Volunteer Year (IVY) 2026 was officially launched at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, marking the beginning of a global movement to recognize and strengthen the role of volunteerism in advancing sustainable development worldwide. The event was co-hosted by the Permanent Missions of Germany and Kazakhstan to the United Nations, together with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme.

Held on International Volunteer Day, the high-level launch brought together UN Member States, UN leaders and volunteerism advocates from around the world. The programme featured remarks from the President of the United Nations General Assembly, UNV Executive Coordinator Toily Kurbanov, and representatives of Member States, underscoring the critical contribution of volunteers to communities, societies and global development efforts.
