Senegal has expressed its firm commitment to commemorating the International Year of Volunteers across all fourteen regions of the country and within every sphere of professional and social life. The objective is to position volunteerism as a key instrument for sustainable, community-driven development.

The first activity under the IVY 2026 Action Plan took place on 14 March in Mbour, located 84 km from Dakar. Organized by the association Wa Mbedemi and CODEVS, the event consisted of an Intercultural Iftar (locally known as Ndogou), symbolically marking the official territorial launch of the International Year of Volunteers.

This initiative fostered enhanced collaboration between the cities of Dakar, Pikine, and Keur
Massar. Discussions focused on interreligious dialogue, tolerance, and social cohesion—values that strongly align with the principles of volunteerism. These themes were particularly timely given the notable convergence of the Ramadan and Lent observances this year, a moment that further strengthened national unity.

A Platform for Dialogue, Cooperation, and Community Engagement
The Intercultural Ndogou brought together approximately forty participants, including territorial
authorities, religious leaders, young volunteers, and senior volunteers.

The event also served as an illustration of robust North–South cooperation and intercultural
dialogue. It is jointly led by:
• Ms. Niama Sidibé, French volunteer
• Mr. Cheikh Dia, Senegalese volunteer
Their joint initiative aims to:
• Enhance the appeal and visibility of volunteerism
• Mobilize key stakeholders engaged in community and civic participation
• Promote innovative environmental and social initiatives within the Mbour territory
The event further highlighted the role of the Mbour Social and Environmental Innovation
Center (CISEM), which hosted the proceedings. The gathering concluded with a collective
breaking of the fast, reinforcing the spirit of unity and shared purpose.

Looking Ahead

This inaugural activity sets the stage for a dynamic and impactful year devoted to volunteerism.
Throughout 2026, the CODEVS will continue rolling out activities designed to strengthen civic
engagement, promote inclusive participation, and advance local development priorities across
Senegal.
