Play is Serious Work: What Adults Fail to Appreciate About Children's Play
Taking Children’s Play Seriously
Play gives children opportunities to explore, experiment and learn on their own terms. When adults overlook its developmental value, children’s time and freedom to play can become restricted, limiting experiences that support creativity, problem-solving, emotional regulation and independence.
Dr. Rania Sadeq from Saint Xavier University will explore the significance of play for children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development, challenging common adult misconceptions. Drawing on developmental research, she will examine the consequences of play deprivation and adults’ responsibilities in protecting children’s opportunities to play.
The webinar will address how environmental barriers and adult-imposed restrictions can limit play, alongside the potential effects on children’s creativity, social relationships and emotional development. Practical approaches will include protecting time for child-directed play, creating accessible and stimulating environments, respecting children’s autonomy and advocating for educational and community practices that recognise play as central to healthy development.
We invite educators, parents, psychologists, students in education programmes and everyone interested in protecting children’s opportunities to play to join the webinar and explore ways to turn awareness into action.
The webinar is being organised within the scope of the International Volunteer Year (IVY). It is free of charge, and participants will receive certificates upon completion.
