Presentation of the latest report “Volunteering and Social Engagement in Poland 2020–2024: A Research Synthesis”
We are pleased to present the latest report, “Volunteering and Social Engagement in Poland 2020–2024: A Research Synthesis” by Dr. hab. Anna Domaradzka, Dr. Magdalena Roszczyńska-Kurasińska, and Dr. Agata Żbikowska. The report has been prepared in Polish Governmental Centre for Civil Society Development – National Freedom Institute – IVY 2026 National Focal Point.
The report is based on the most up-to-date social research data and provides a comprehensive overview of the motivations and origins of civic engagement and volunteering in Poland, as well as the reasons behind the lack of such involvement. The publication answers key questions regarding the factors that encourage — or discourage — participation in volunteering and social activities.
The latest findings show that civic engagement and volunteering are rebounding after the slowdown caused by the pandemic.
Key findings from the report include:
🔹 In 2024, volunteering engagement reached its highest level in several years.
🔹 More and more people declare participation in local initiatives and community activities.
🔹 Poles most commonly engage in charity campaigns, local events, and support activities for people in need.
🔹 The greatest challenge remains continuity — many people volunteer occasionally rather than on a long-term basis.
🔹 The report also highlights the enormous potential of young people and non-governmental organizations in strengthening social bonds and community resilience.
The main recommendations of the report “Volunteering and Social Engagement in Poland 2020–2024” focus on several key areas:
📌 Key recommendations at a glance:
🔹 Develop long-term volunteering, not only short-term campaigns
🔹 Strengthen civic education and youth engagement
🔹 Provide better support for NGOs and local leaders
🔹 Build stronger cooperation between local governments, schools, businesses, and NGOs
🔹 Improve access to volunteering opportunities and information
🔹 Increase recognition and promotion of volunteers
🔹 Use technology more effectively to organize social initiatives
🔹 Rebuild social trust and strengthen local community ties
