President of Kazakhstan Calls for Expanding the Volunteer Movement and International Cooperation
President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev addressed participants of the Volunteer Forum, emphasizing the importance of volunteerism as a key driver of social cohesion, civic responsibility, and sustainable development.
The President noted that the current year is being observed globally as the International Year of Volunteers, highlighting the growing role of volunteerism in addressing social challenges and strengthening communities.
“Being a volunteer means doing good deeds, serving society, setting an example for others, and demonstrating genuine care for one’s country,” the President stated.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev underscored that compassion, generosity, and a willingness to help those in need have always been among the defining values of the Kazakh people, passed down from generation to generation.
The President highlighted the significant growth of the volunteer movement in Kazakhstan. While the country counted approximately 50,000 volunteers in 2020, their number has now reached 300,000. Over the same period, the number of organizations engaged in volunteer activities has increased nearly fourfold and currently exceeds 800.
In this regard, the Head of State expressed support for the introduction of a Digital Volunteer Passport, which would help recognize and record the contribution of volunteers to society.
The President also noted that the implementation of the current three-year Roadmap for the Development of Volunteerism is coming to an end this year. He stressed the importance of developing a new comprehensive strategic document extending through 2030 to ensure the continued growth and institutional strengthening of the volunteer sector.
Addressing the private sector, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called on businesses to pay greater attention to corporate volunteering and to actively support initiatives that contribute to the well-being of communities across the country.
The President further emphasized the need to establish new international platforms for exchanging experience, sharing best practices, and coordinating volunteer initiatives at the global level.
As part of these efforts, Kazakhstan will host the First Forum of Volunteers of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) this year. The event is expected to serve as an important platform for strengthening regional cooperation and promoting volunteer engagement across the CIS region.
The President also highlighted the contribution of volunteers to environmental sustainability and community development. In particular, he noted that volunteers actively participate in the improvement of public spaces and settlements. Last year alone, they took part in more than 1,300 events held under the nationwide Taza Kazakhstan campaign and launched numerous educational and awareness-raising initiatives.
Concluding his remarks, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stressed the importance of continuing the broad promotion of the Taza Kazakhstan movement as a nationwide idea and an integral element of state policy aimed at fostering civic engagement, environmental responsibility, and social solidarity.
“Kazakhstan supports the aspiration of its citizens to become volunteers and to contribute to society through meaningful and beneficial activities,” the President stated.
