UNV participated in the event alongside members of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Guyana, presenting a range of institutional information materials. The occasion provided an opportunity to highlight International Volunteer Day (IVD) and introduce the IVY2026 initiative, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. A dedicated segment of the event focused on the early 1990s, a period during which the UNV programme was among the largest in the region. During that time, Guyana benefited from the deployment of specialists across multiple disciplines through programmes implemented by various UN agencies. These contributions were instrumental in sustaining essential services and supporting national operations across several sectors. To document this legacy, UNV Focal Point Mr. Cesar Guedes—himself a former UN Volunteer in 1992–1993—collaborated with former UNV Administrative Assistant Ms. Maria Fraser (now retired) to reconnect with several former UN Volunteers who served during that period, as well as former UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Juan Luis Larrabure. Their testimonies helped revive memories of a time when UNV had a strong presence in Guyana, with more than 100 male and female experts from diverse countries contributing to national capacity development. In this context, UNV Guyana, with support from the UNV Regional Office in Panama, produced a couple of short videos illustrating UNV’s contributions to national development during that era. The videos attracted the attention from local authorities and the public, who engaged actively with the material and expressed interest about UNV, IVD, and IVY2026, as well as the programme’s potential to support Guyana during its current phase of economic transformation.
