This case study describes a low-cost, participatory approach to engaging young volunteers in health equity and sustainable development at the 2026 SDG Volunteer Camp in Shaki, Azerbaijan.

Dr Hande Harmancı, WHO Representative in Azerbaijan, developed and facilitated the session, which combined a rapid anonymous survey, an interactive exercise illustrating unequal opportunities, and a facilitated discussion on the social determinants of health and volunteer-led action.

Drawing on 81 survey responses and session reflections, the case study shows how simple, adaptable activities can make health inequities visible, encourage critical thinking, and inspire young people to move beyond providing assistance to addressing the underlying causes of inequality. It also shares practical lessons for replicating the approach in youth and volunteer programs with minimal preparation and resources.
