This webinar titled: Active Citizenship Has No Age Limit: Democratic rights, civic participation and volunteering, organized within the framework of the International Volunteer Year 2026 (IVY2026), explored the role of volunteering as a pathway to active citizenship and democratic participation, particularly among older persons. The webinar presented the objectives, activities, and preliminary findings of the AGES Project, a European initiative focused on strengthening the civic and democratic engagement of older citizens through dialogue with civil society organizations and policymakers. Participants also examined key concepts related to democratic rights, meaningful participation, inclusion, ageism, and the important role of civil society in fostering participatory democracy.

The session highlighted how volunteering contributes to stronger communities, social cohesion, and lifelong civic engagement. It featured a presentation on IVY2026 and insights from the UN Volunteers study, Volunteer Work Among Older Persons: Trends and Policy Implications for Ageing Societies, which examined the contributions and experiences of older volunteers . Through interactive polls, knowledge assessments, and discussions, participants increased their understanding of democratic participation and the value of harnessing the experience, skills, and perspectives of older people to support inclusive and resilient societies.
