Synthesis

• This chapter highlights the role that volunteering can play in building and strengthening people–state relationships, thereby contributing to better governance that promotes sustainable development and peace.
• It concludes that volunteer–state relationships are an important mechanism for expanding volunteers’ roles in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in this Decade of Action.
• The chapter the research findings and offers recommendations on policies to strengthen people–state relationships and tap into volunteerism to build equal and inclusive societies.
