Synthesis

The objective of this research was to characterize the sociodemographic profile of volunteers serving with a community-based organization, to understand their motivations, and to outline their contribution to humanitarian response activities.  

Mixed research methods (both quantitative and qualitative) were used to collect evidence from 2,500 Caritas volunteers in 23 states of Venezuela. 

Main findings include the following: 

• 80% of the community volunteers that participated in this research are women. 

• The main contributions of community volunteers to humanitarian response include food preparation/provision, healthcare services and community learning activities related to sanitation and safe water management. 

• The motivations of volunteers are mostly linked to emotional and spiritual rewards as well as resilience. 

• Projections carried out estimate the contribution of volunteering to humanitarian activities at more than 15 million hours per year.
