Reporting positive contribution of volunteering to the SDGs

The Government began the National Reforestation Crusade in 2007. Between 2015 and 2019, it reforested a total of 104,369 hectares, with the active participation of 2,461,177 volunteers, including primary and secondary pupils, university students, farmers, indigenous and Afro-descendant communities and forest producers. This has helped increase forest cover and the sequestration of greenhouse gases.

In 2020, the Government promoted reducing forest fires to help protect and conserve forests. Equipment was provided to 160 volunteer community brigades, made up of 1,750 community brigade members, and 11,761 days of house-to-house visits were carried out to raise awareness of preventing forest and agricultural fires, involving 58,948 people (35,833 men and 23,115 women).
